William Joseph Massey, III, M.D., a long-time resident of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away on December 4, 2023.  Born in 1936 in Smithfield, North Carolina, Dr. Massey was pre-deceased by his parents, Dr. William J. Massey, Jr., and Leone Sanders Massey.  Survivors include his life partner, Nancy Rachel Elder; his son, Dr. John Gant Massey (Deborah), of Jackson, Mississippi; his daughter, Kelly Lorraine Massey-Carlier (Alain), and his granddaughter, Virginia Claire Margaret Carlier, of Geneva, Switzerland; and his beloved canine companions, Jack and Patty Cake.

Dr. Massey was graduated from Duke University in 1958 and Duke Medical School in 1962, and then trained in internal medicine at the University of Alabama and the University of Virginia.  He served active military duty as a Lt. Commander in the United States Naval Reserve during the Vietnam War.  He then established a solo private practice of internal medicine in Williamsburg.  Dr. Massey was an attending physician at Williamsburg Community Hospital and Sentara Regional Medical Center, and was the Medical Director for the Dow Badische Company in Williamsburg.  Additional medical positions included medical consultant for the Virginia Heart Institute in Richmond, Virginia, and clinical instructor for Eastern Virginia Medical School.  During his career in medicine, he was President of the Williamsburg-James City Medical Society.  He received numerous medical awards, served on various medical boards, and maintained memberships in many medical organizations, as he completed a fifty-year career in medicine.

As a long-time member of the Duke University Iron Dukes organization, Dr. Massey was a loyal supporter of Duke University, its medical school, and its athletic programs.  He was a classic car enthusiast, and a member of several national, state, and local automobile clubs.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Humane Society, 430  Waller Mill Road, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23185; Duke Medical School, Development and Alumni Affairs, 300 W.
