William (Bill) Arnold Mettler of Williamsburg passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Born January 26, 1929, he was the youngest child of the late Walter Ernest Mettler, Sr., and Florence Amelia (Seidel) and the
beloved brother of Walter Ernest Mettler, Jr., Florence Amelia Lagergren, and Robert Fredrick Mettler. William was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all. He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Lawrence Technological University prior to becoming a student at Michigan State University where he graduated with a degree in Landscape Architecture in 1953. William began his professional career as an assistant City Planner in Madison Heights and then moved to Oak Park, Michigan where he worked for several years as the Planning Director prior to moving to Williamsburg, Virginia with his family in 1974. He was Director of Planning for the City of Williamsburg until his retirement in 1986 when he opened his own business, Mettler Landscape Development Company which he operated for several years. He was a lover of plants, animals, and everything in nature, which he shared and conveyed to his children.
He was active in the communities in which he lived, whether it was church participation, family gatherings or serving in Rotary Club Chapters both in Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia and Tobermory, Ontario, Canada. He and Maude were long-term members of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church. He spent most of his free time with his wife and family at their summer home at Tobermory, Ontario, Canada where he first visited as a child in 1938. He enjoyed sports, especially watching his grandchildren, telling stories, and fishing.
He was preceded in death by Maude in 2018 after a life of love and marriage for 65 years. Left to cherish his memory are his children, William Douglas Mettler and his wife Lynne of Williamsburg, Virginia; Nancy Mettler Galvin and her husband Jim of St. Marys, Georgia, David William Mettler and his wife Susan of Providence Forge, Virginia; grandchildren, Christopher Mettler and his wife Lauren, Cameron Mettler, Will Berry and his wife Leslie, Becky Berry and Meaghan Galvin; great-grandchildren, Collin Galvin, Julie Cruz, Sean Berry, Calvin Berry, Mason Berry, Reid Mettler, and Tate Mettler.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday February 17, 2024, at Bruton Parish Church 201 Duke of Gloucester Street Williamsburg, VA 23185. Following the service, the Interment will be private in the Bruton Parish Church Courtyard. After the Interment, the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Bruton Parish Church – Parish House 331 Duke of Gloucester Street.
