Thomas Alan Malec, a loving father, devoted brother, and esteemed member of the community passed away on January 17, 2024, in Williamsburg, VA. His remarkable life was marked by dedication to his country, remarkable achievements, and unwavering commitment to his family.

A man of accomplishment, Thomas enrolled in ROTC and a was a National Merit Latin Scholar graduating from Central High School in York, PA in 1965. He furthered his education at Grove City College continuing ROTC and was also on the debate team (Pi Kappa Delta) graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages (Spanish) in 1969. Later he obtained his master’s in public administration from Troy State University in 1981 while in the US Air Force.

Thomas served his nation with distinction as a Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force upon retirement. During his career, he held various important roles. As Office of Special Investigations Commander, he was awarded best small detachment in Air Force. As Security Police Commander he was responsible for the entire base security and additionally hosted the Annual Air Show. Thomas finished his military career as Senior Staff Administrator (Chief Plans & Programs) Security Police at ATC in 1989 after 20 years. He earned National Defense Service & Air Force Commendation Medals, then Air Force Outstanding Unit & Air Force Organizational Excellence Awards and was certified from the Department of State Foreign Service Institute in the Japanese language.

Thomas later became a Government Contractor working for TRW and Northrop Grumman in Training & Development of Computer Network Security Systems and thereafter a traveling Network Engineer installing/testing these systems for the US Air Force worldwide. He eventually transferred to Department of Energy Headquarters and transitioned from a Contractor to a Federal Employee. Thomas retired as the Senior Counterintelligence Cyber Advisor in 2012 after 10 years.

Outside of his career, Thomas was a proud member of the VFW and American Legion. He co-created “Yankeestaff Kennel” in England and showed/bred their beloved Staffordshire Bull Terriers winning Top Breeder in 1983 and Top Dog in 1984 at Crufts. He also found solace and spiritual guidance at the family Church, Westminster Presbyterian in York, PA.

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nancy Malec and his sister, Marsha Malec. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his three sons, James, Joshua, and Jared Malec who will forever cherish the memories they shared with their father. He is also survived by his aunt Carol Dick Stabley, brothers Frank Malec, Peter Deckman and his grandchildren, Cassidy, Jared, and Theodore Malec.

The funeral service to honor Thomas Alan Malec’s life will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, where his contributions to his country will be forever remembered. In this time of sorrow, let us remember Thomas for his unwavering dedication to duty, his love for family, and lasting impact he made on the lives of those around him. May his soul find eternal rest, and may his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him. Bucktrout Funeral Home is assisting the family.
