Stanley Brown

Stanley Eugene Brown, 83, of Williamsburg, passed away on December 2, 2013, at Woodhaven of The Williamsburg Landing in the presence of his loving wife Judy. He was born on June 17, 1930 in Culpeper County, Va., and was the son of Herbert C. and Nellie H. Brown. Stan received a B.A. from Emory and Henry College and a M.Ed. from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer in Okinawa. Stan began his career as a high school teacher and football coach in Tennessee and later in Petersburg, Va. He was an elementary school principal in Chesapeake, Va., in the early 1960s. Stan entered the business world as an underwriter for The Equitable in 1963, and he enjoyed success in the insurance industry until the College of William and Mary called him back into the field of education in 1969. At William and Mary, Stan started in the Office of Financial Aid as an administrator. He went on to become the Director of Corporate Relations and served as acting Vice President of Development in 1980. Stan established the Department of Career Services in 1981 and was that department’s director until his retirement in 1994. He was the president of both the Virginia and the Southern College Placement Associations where he was recognized by both organizations with their respective Distinguished Service Awards. He also was a member of the Board of Governors for the National College Placement Association. Stan was particularly proud of the recognition by the student body of the College to be selected by the Classes of 1978 and 1994 to be Honorary Marshal at the respective graduation ceremonies. He was also recognized as an Honorary Member of the Young Guarde of the Society of the Alumni of the College of William and Mary. In 1995, Stan received the Emory and Henry College Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award. Stan gave freely of his time as a volunteer for both his community and his church. He was a past president of the United Fund of Greater Williamsburg and also a past president of the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club. He was the past chairman of the successful Williamsburg, James City County school bond referendum and a past member of the same school board. He also served as the past chairman of the Regional Commission on Growth and was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy. He was recognized with that organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Stan was the director of the Colonial Capitol Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. He particularly enjoyed his volunteer work as an on site interpreter for Jamestown Rediscovery. Stan was a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church and served as a lay reader and chairman of the Building Committee. He was also past president of the Cooperative Ministries of Williamsburg. Stan was preceded in death by his daughter Jan, his parents and four siblings: Roy, Hazel, Florence, and Maxine. Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy McInturff Brown, his daughter Bly Brown and her husband Bill Fisher, his son Stanley “Mac” Brown and his wife Mom Nak Brown, his grandchildren, Austin and his wife Colleen; Eleanor, Kevin, Corinna and her husband Keith; his sister Katherine, his brothers Estil and his wife Marge and Danny and his wife Maxine and many nephews and nieces. Stan loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed people and did not know a stranger. Stan traveled extensively; seeing new places and meeting people were some of his favorite pastimes. He had many good and loyal friends. Stan knew how to celebrate life. There will be a service to honor and celebrate Stan’s life at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church on December 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
