Samuel Preston Jeter passed away at 95 years of age on May 9, 2023 in Williamsburg, Virginia.
He was a devoted husband, father, grand-father, great-grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Geneva “Scibbie” Jeter in February 2015.
Sam’s legacy is his devotion to his family. His commitment to them coupled with a strong sense of tradition and loyalty has been instilled in the generations of his family who are following his example. Sam was a man of strong character, loyal to his family and friends. His final wishes
were that he would live in his home in his final days, and he did. He will be missed.
He was born and raised on the family farm in Hanover County with his parents Robert and Louise Jeter and his six siblings that have preceded him in death – Robert, Helen, Smiley, Nancy, Bill, and Martha.
Sam served in the U.S Army followed by his return to Hanover County where he began his work with C&P Telephone. Sam was the American dream rising from humble beginnings working on the farm progressing through the skilled craft ranks of the phone company and retiring in management at AT&T in 1993.
Sam and Scibbie moved to Kingsmill Virginia in retirement where he continued his love of fishing, tennis, college basketball, following the NY Yankees, and attending college sporting events with his children and friends. Sam was an avid salt water fisherman using his beloved boat, ‘White Cloud’ in the rivers and bays in Virginia. He especially enjoyed catching many prized rockfish. He was a regular on the tennis courts at Kingsmill until his early 90’s. He enjoyed traveling to the Daytona 500 each year and attending the ACC Basketball Tournament for 50 straight years.
Sam is survived by his daughters Sandy Smith (Tom) and Robin Byars (Hal), son Brian (Layne); grandchildren Kelly Little (Malcolm), Tyler Smith, Ashley Hanley (Brendan), Carter Byars (Eres), Preston Jeter (Heather) and Jimmy Jeter; great-grandchildren Mac, Eva, Frances Miller, Louise,
and Harold.
