Robert McBurney Hayes, 89, passed away on May 23, 2021 in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was Born in Chattanooga, TN, son of the late Col (U.S. Army) William Paul Hayes and Ceola McBurney Hayes. He was pre-deceased by his brother William Paul Hayes, Jr.
Bob spent his youth in many regions of the country while his father served in the military. He graduated from Albuquerque High School, New Mexico and Seattle University with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Airforce Aviation Cadets.
He loved the outdoors and working in the Coal Mines in Logan, Virginia, surveying in The Idaho Clearwater National Forest and in Juneau, Alaska during the summers while in college. He worked at NASA and Ft. Eustis, retiring after 30 years. He then worked for 10 years at VDOT.
He was devoted to his family and enjoyed studying Civil War, World War II, Philosophy and Biblical History. He was a former member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of Bruton Parish Church.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Betty Edwards Hayes, his daughter Elizabeth McBurney Hayes of Durham, NC, his brother Col. (U.S. Army) John Grier Hayes (Paula), brother-in-law LT. Col (U.S. Marines) Bob E. Edwards (Mariann) and sister-in-law Mary Jo E. Pope (William) and 3 nephews.
A Funeral service will be held at Bruton Parish Church on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 11:00 am followed by burial in the churchyard.
Memorial gifts may be made to Bruton Parish Church, P.O. Box B.P., Williamsburg, VA 23187, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Salvation Army. Online condolences may be offered to the family at bucktroutfuneralhome.net.
