Gifts & Memorial Donations

Robert Hatheway Welch, Williamsburg, 74, died November 28, 2016 of complications from dementia and malignant melanoma.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann K. and Emerson F. Welch.  Rob is survived by his brother Peter F. Welch (Elizabeth) of Jacksonville, FL; nephew Christopher F. Welch of Richmond; former wife, Sue W. Welch of Williamsburg; many cousins and caring friends.  He was born in Hartford, CT, and moved to Richmond, VA in 1952.  Rob received his B.A. from Hampden-Sydney College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.  He taught French for 30 years at The College of William and Mary, and especially enjoyed directing the college’s summer and junior year programs in Montpellier, France.  Rob retired in 2000 and moved back to Richmond, staying active with various volunteer programs, even creating The Friends of William Byrd Park.  Working with various groups, he planted many trees in effort to make the park and his neighborhood once again safe and beautiful.  Family and friends would like to thank all the staff at Brookdale and Gentiva Hospice for their kindness and caring.  Internment in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, CT will be private.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.  Online condolences may be shared at bucktroutfuneralhome.net

My Sincerest Condolences to the Family, May you find comfort in the promises that God (Psalms 83:18) gives us for the future. He will, in the near future, end all reasons for distress, even sickness and death (Revelation 21:4). Also, He will reunite us with our dead loved ones (John 5:28,29). May the God of all comfort be with you and keep the family together now and always. Very truly yours Pfl.

We loved Rob as extended member of our family. The family history is long...growing up in Woodland Heights. He was a wonderful advocate of education. We loved our holidays with him and family celebrations. He will be missed! May you rest in peace, Rob, and know many that loved you!
