Mary Elizabeth Smith

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Smith, 86, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2012 in Williamsburg, VA. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Howard Marston Smith, Jr. Betty was born in Syracuse, NY but eventually moved to Williamsburg in 1950 to be with her husband, a Professor of Kinesiology and Department Chairman for 28 years at the College of William and Mary. Betty was active in the Green Spring Garden Club, the College of William and Mary Womenís Club, and a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Sharon Smith Lehman (Stephen), and two sons Marston Humbert Smith and Howard Franklin Smith. She leaves behind two grandchildren, Matthew Stephen Lehman (June) and Stephanie Elizabeth Lehman and a 6 month old great-granddaughter Sally Harper Lehman. Betty was a kind, patient, loving woman who devoted her life to taking care of her family. She will finally be at peace with her husband.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 at 11:30 AM at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA with a reception to follow. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, she asked that contributions be sent to the Howard and Betty Smith scholarship fund, College of William and Mary, Department of Kinesiology, 251 Ukrops Way, Williamsburg, VA 23185 or to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23185.
