Marshall Jeffrey Spaan, 94, a resident of Patriots Colony, Williamsburg, Virginia, peacefully passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015. The son of Blanche and Maximilian Spaan, Jeff was born on January 5, 1921 in Jersey City, New Jersey and raised in Mendham, New Jersey by his maternal grandparents.Jeff is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Catherine G. Spaan, and his son, Marshall Jeffrey Spaan, Jr. His daughter, Marion ‘Sandy’ Patterson resides in Toano, Virginia. He was a grandfather to four and a great -grandfather to six.

A life well lived began with Jeff’s church service as an altar boy, community service as an Eagle Scout, and military service as a Naval Aviator during World War II. An accomplished 32 year corporate management career followed with The Quaker Oats Company, highlighted by his recognition as Kiwanis’ Man of the Year in 1983.

As an 18 year resident of Patriots Colony, Jeff actively participated in numerous business and social activities, including founding the Colony Chorus.

A funeral mass will take place Friday, July 10, 2015 at 11am, at St. Bede’s Catholic Church,3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, Virginia 23188.

    Deeply saddened to hear of Mr Spaan's passing. My mother, Joan Placko lives in AL at Patriot's Colony. When I visited her, I frequently spoke with Mr. Spaan & so enjoyed his company. On a number of occasions I had the good fortune to hear him sing " Old Bones" & now play the song regularly on our in home sound system. My sincerest condolences . Janet Valliere

    I have appreciated every moment we had with Jeff. He was a wonderful man and had a presence no one can match. I will miss the daily jokes and laughter he brought. He leaves all of is at Patriots with wonderful memories that will continue to bring a smile to our faces for years to come. I am grateful for have been blessed to meet him.
