Gifts & Memorial Donations

Marion (Tiger) Gertrude Oyer Extraordinary Mother, Volunteer and Full time Navy wife of 65 years passed away at the young age of almost 86 early this month.

She was preceded by her Husband Lt. Edwin (Quill) C. Oyer, parents William and Dorothy Sieber and her Sister Ruth Warren.

A graduate from Providence Rhode Island, she had a brief career in the Insurance Industry before Pop swept her off her feet.

She was a great Homemaker and travel guide all over the world. While Pop took care of Navy business, She took care of everything else two boys and a home required.

She had many duty stations to manage starting in Rhode Island then including, New Jersey, Hawaii, Florida, Ohio, Sicily, Virginia, Guam, Iceland, Greenland, South Carolina then finally landing back in Virginia for good!

Once the sons where gone, Mom had 25% of her time free……….she still had to manage Quill!

She saw an add in the paper and became an avid volunteer with Eastern State Hospital for over a decade. She started with bringing pets from local pounds to ESH and was heart warmed to see the withdrawn come out of their shell reacting with the pets.

After she saw the patients reactions to the pets, she then regularly went on outings to the pool, museums, grocery shopping what ever they could do as a group to seem more normal and come out of their shell. As mom said ” be free like any human being should be”.

She was so modest and selfless with her time, she volunteered nearly 2,000 hours and thought that was the norm.

She was a fantastic cook, rose and plant gardener and the best MOM bar none any two sons could ever have.

After her family, volunteering, going to the beach and overnight bus trips were always her passion. Her biggest job was babysitting the “Quill” once he retired, that was really a full time job. Behind every strong man, is a stronger women……that was Mom.

Her Legacy lives on through her sons Brian(Joy), Steven(Norma), third generation grandson Brandon (Jill) forth generation great grandson Andrew and great grandchildren Dana & Matthew Morrison.

She is survived by a wayward brother Richard and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 10, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM with service to immediately follow at Bucktrout Funeral Home.
