Lois graduated from The Matthew Whaley School in 1949. From 1949 to 1957, she worked for Colonial Williamsburg as a Classifier in the Archives and Records Department. Lois then served 30 years in civil service for the US Navy at both Fort Eustis and Cheatham Annex. She retired in 1988 as Head of the Budget and Statistical Branch at Cheatham Annex. During her tenure, she received numerous recognitions of her superior performance and professionalism.

Lois was blessed with over 30 years of retirement where she enjoyed gardening, keeping flowers, feeding her birds, traveling, and spending time with family. She was a Sunday School teacher and active member of Walnut Hills Baptist Church.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Orvin Browning (Emily), Geneva Menzel (Emil), Llene Menzel (Gary), Marjorie Browning, and Eleanor Richardson (Willie), and a niece, Maxine Menzel Amos. While Lois did not have children of her own, she was honored as one of the matriarchs of the Browning family, and was considered another mother and grandmother.  She is survived by nieces Barbara Menzel Vellrath (Andy), Bonnie Menzel Amo (Craig), and Sharon Richardson Dunn (Robert), and nephews Lyle (Suzie) and Fred (Rebecca) Browning, Brian Menzel (Mary), and Bill (Bess), Larry (Penny), and Gerald (Mona) Richardson, as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

The funeral will immediately follow at 1:00pm at the church. A private burial will take place at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News. Lois requests that memorial contributions be sent to WHBC, Capital Assets Fund (1014 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185). The family wishes to thank the staff of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care throughout Lois’s short illness.
