Lawrence Alan Richardson born in Newport News, VA on June 22,1958 passed away at home in Williamsburg, VA on November 9, 2023, after a 10 1/2 year battle with cancer.  He is survived by his husband of 12 years (together 32 years) Jim Gochenour, their son Tyler, parents Larry and Johanne, sister Janet and her husband Allen, nephew Drew and his wife Haley and their children Abigale and Bodhi and brother- in- law Jeff Gochenour.  He was a Bethel grad (1976 – go Bruins) and a graduate of VCU (1985 – go Rams).

Alan, his preferred name, ultimately found his professional life passion with the Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF). He served as the Executive Vice President of Strategic Patient Solutions. Most of all Alan enjoyed and appreciated LIFE.  He cherished running in 5ks, live concerts, wine tasting and martini competitions, antique shopping, hosting intimate parties, the spirit of the Christmas season, travel and spending as much time as possible with the love of his life, his husband Jim, at their place in Rehoboth Beach, DE – Alan’s happy place – toes in sand- cocktail in hand!

Alan was very involved in community activities.  He was a past President of the West End Jaycees in Richmond, a past President of the Virginia Jaycees (VAJC) and the Virginia JCI Senate, a past National vice President (NVP) of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (JCI USA) and a past NVP of the US JCI Senate.  He served most recently as Chair of the prestigious US JCI Senate Bylaws and Constitution committee.  Alan also trained leaders at the local, state, national and international levels.  He was recognized as a Life Member of the West End and Virginia Jaycees, a US Ambassador (life membership in JCI USA) and as a JCI Senator (life membership in the worldwide Jaycees).  Alan was also recognized and an Outstanding Young Man in America four times and in 1998 as an Outstanding Young Virginian by the Virginia Jaycees.  He was recognized by Patient Advocate Foundation in December 2004 as Advocate of the Year.

Alan served on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations including the local chapter of the Red Cross and the Williamsburg AIDS Network and the Leadership Historic Triangle Board.  He became a Trustee of the Virginia Jaycee Foundation since 2002 and served as President 2008-2012.

My condolences to Alan’s. Although I never met Alan I much appreciated the funding provided to me for my Multiple Sclerosis. Without the treatment provided I would not be walking today. Thanks to an outstanding person
