Joanne “Jo” Flint Bramhall Strickland (95) died peacefully on December 24, 2022 at home in Williamsburg, Virginia with family.
Born September 13, 1927 in Silver Spring, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mildred Whitford Bramhall. On June 26, 1948. She married Rupert ‘Strick’ Strickland, who preceded her in death on April 21, 2015.
Joanne is survived by her four children, Whitford Randall Strickland and his wife, Judith, of Williamsburg, VA; Lucinda Strickland Unger and her husband, Carl-Michael, of Stockholm, Sweden; Daniel Linwood Strickland and his wife, Cheryl, of Lewes, DE, and Suzanne Strickland Simons and her husband, Charles, of Port Matilda, PA. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Sean C. Strickland and his wife Shauna of Hampton, VA, John D. Algers and his wife Anna of Cincinnati, OH, Summer Oostra and her husband, Daniel of Williamsburg, VA, J. Michelle Mac Mahon and her husband, James of Oslo, Norway, Jamie Strickland Rosip and her husband, Karl of Downingtown, PA, Daniel C. Simons of Pittsburgh, PA and Connor M. Simons of Lancaster, PA. Joanne is also survived by her five great grandchildren, Jonathan and David Algers of Cincinnati, OH, Benjamin Oostra of Williamsburg, VA and Kaden and Charlie Rosip of Downingtown, PA.
Joanne was preceded in death by her grandson, Stephen L. Strickland of Marietta, GA and her brother, Robert W. Bramhall of Sebring, FL
Joanne grew up in Silver Spring, MD before graduating from the University of Maryland where she met her husband, Strick. They settled in Rockville, MD. Later they moved to Overland Park, KS and finally to Wayne, PA. While living in Wayne she received her Master’s degree from Villanova University and worked as a psychologist at Montgomery County Community College for 20 years. In her final years Joanne, resided in Williamsburg, VA, near family.
She had been an active member of Twinbrook Baptist Church in Rockville, MD and Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, PA. Joanne was actively involved in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the League of Women Voters. She was a member of various bridge groups, square dance groups, numerous book clubs and walking groups. In her leisure she loved to read, travel and was always planning their next trip. Joanne particularly loved to spend her summers in Rhode Island and visiting family.
A memorial service will be held Saturday March 18, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Perryville Bible Church located at 220 Moonstone Beach Road, South Kingston, RI. Jim Menzies officiating. Interment will follow in Perryville Church Cemetery, Perryville, RI.
