Gifts & Memorial Donations

Joann was born on Jan 11, 1952 to Mae Elizabeth (Hurd) and Robert Anthony Bocrie, while he was stationed at Ft Lee, VA. Her teen years were spent working alongside her mother at Hurds II, the family restaurant in Virginia Beach. It was hard work, but she always cherished that time with her mother, who died shortly after. Joann was in First Colonial High School’s first graduating class, then went on to graduate from ODU in 1976.

Joann became a dedicated teacher. She was proud to teach in MIddlesex County, Norfolk, then 29 years in Newport News Schools, touching countless lives. She and her beloved husband, Ronald Sautter, had 3 children in their rural Williamsburg home, where she developed her lifelong love of flowers. She also loved the Lord, and was a member of Williamsburg Christian Church. When Ron died suddenly, Joann moved the family to Hampton, close to her extended family, and joined Northampton Church of Christ.

Joann died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, 2/16, after a long cancer battle. She lived to see 3 grandchildren that she loved playing with, drawing pictures and telling Knock Knock Jokes. Her family, flowers, and swimming were always her joys, a trip to the beach always made her happy. She remained close to 2 of her teacher friends, Susan Neely and Marilyn Morris.  She leaves behind children, Amanda Elizabeth Venable (John), Justin Robert Sautter (Melissa), Lee Thomas Sautter, and her grandchildren, Emma Grace, Cayden, and Brinley. She also leaves 4 loving brothers, Bob (Cheryl), Jerry (Lori), Jim (Delores), and Steve (Cindy). She will be missed by several cousins and 3 generations of nieces and nephews.

Services with be at Bucktrout Funeral Home in Williamsburg on 2/24, at 11 am. The family will receive visitors beforehand, starting at 10. In memory of Joann, the family asks that you wear green or blue, her favorite colors. Joann will be buried (privately) at Williamsburg Memorial Park, next to Ron.

Mom, I miss talking to you daily. You fought the good fight. I know you have received a new body and are with our Savior. I believe you are walking or flying in heaven. You finally get to be with dad. We will be together soon. I love you to the moon and back as we would say. Love, Amanda

Connie Zack says: My dearJoann... I have so many beautiful memories of our friendship together. What a very special time in life we shared....new brides, beginning teachers, raising toddlers while working and setting up our first homes. I so loved our many conversations together especially those on parenting and teaching at Dunbar. I've always admired your faith and the ways you faced the challenges of life with grace and sometimes a laugh. Oh brother, we did laugh through those hectic years! I pray that you are now with your blessed Ron. You loved him so very much. I deeply regret that time and distance has kept us apart. You were the best support for me as I began my own family life. You will always remain a very special friend in my heart. I was very fortunate that you touched my life. Amanda, Lee, and Justin your Mom was the best and always put you first . I wish you only the best in life.

    Mary McCoy says:
I have so many memories of laughter and tears when Joann and I taught at Jenkins. We made each other laugh so many times. Once we were called out by the principal at a staff meeting because we couldn't stop giggling. Sharing our hearts about our families and lots of laughter made going to work a joy. Joann was my relief when stress was high at work. Joann I am glad you are now with Ron. I know you loved him and missed him so much. Thank you for being my friend.
