Gifts & Memorial Donations

James Sanford Mitchell, 82 years of age passed unexpectedly on December 29th, 2022, and joined his wife, Mary Kay Mitchell of 60 years, in the afterlife. James was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

They moved to South Orange, New Jersey where they resided for over 40 years and retired to Williamsburg, Virginia.

James was a giving and loving parent, uncle, grandfather, mentor and friend. He was also well known for his quick wit and love of sports of all kinds.

James graduated from Marquette University where he earned a BS in Marketing. After moving 11 times in their first 9 years of marriage they settled in South Orange, New Jersey. He came to the Northeast for an international marketing position at Avon cosmetics and then moved on to start his own company, Comprehensive Health, an Innovative preventative health service for businesses. Some of his most prized accomplishments were his record-breaking time at Loras college for the 100-yard dash, hole in one at Ford’s Colony and family.

His generosity and optimism will live on in all of us. His advice to many, “it will all work out” carried him through a full life. He is survived by five children, Patricia (Marty Benn), Sandy (Ronnie Downing), Kelly (Jim Salley), Katie (Alex Locadia), and Jimmy (Meredith Emmer). His 11 grandchildren, Marshall Fogle, Mitchell Downing (Kate Burkeholder), Bailey Fogle, Cassie Downing, Madison Fogle, Gracie Jo Benn, Emma Mae Mitchell, Qing Shuang Downing, RJ Benn, Quinn Downing and Sidda Lee Mitchell, will attest to his unyielding support.

James was also preceded in death by father, James, mother, Helen, and brother Richard. He will be deeply missed by friends and family. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Unbound.org or a charity of your choice. Services will be held at Saint Olaf Catholic Church (104 Norge Lane, Williamsburg, VA 23188) on January 14th, 2023, at 11am followed by a reception.
