Helene Weigand Pitman went to her eternal rest on March 23, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Dr. John Mathews Pitman JR. She is survived by her son John and 3 beloved grandchildren Bert, John IV, and Annamaria. She led a remarkable life. She lived under Nazi rule in Germany where her family were part of the resistance until her father was arrested by the Gestapo to be shipped to Berlin for execution. He escaped the local prison and fled with his family westward until they were liberated by the 761st tank battalion, a highly decorated African American unit and became determined to move to America. She sailed to the US as a passenger on a steamer arriving in Brooklyn, New York. She moved to Williamsburg, Virginia where she met her husband, a part time park ranger, speeding on the parkway. They settled in Williamsburg in 1964. She was fluent in 4 languages and supported innumerable charitable causes and was one of the first runners in Williamsburg an activity she enjoyed until very recently.
