Gualberto Tulod Coronado

Gifts & Memorial Donations

Our beloved father, brother, grandfather, mentor, physician, veteran, and friend Dr. Gualberto Tulod Coronado passed away on Monday, January 3rd, 2022 at the age of 88, one month from 89, in the comfort of his home in Williamsburg, VA. He was born on February 3rd, 1933 in the Philippines to Hermenigildo and Leonora Coronado. After graduating from Manila Central University in the Philippines with a Doctor of Medicine, he would meet his first wife Corazon, with whom he would have his first son (Glenn). Years later, after diligent, hard work, he obtained his United States medical license in psychiatry in 1982 from the Michigan Board of Medicine. Tragically, Corazon passed away in the years that followed. During one of his annual visits to the Philippines, he met his future wife Joanna, a medical resident at a local hospital in Mandaluyong. Together, they would raise three children (John, Gerald, and Jennifer).

For much of his life, he practiced in psychiatry and was last employed at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, the city where he would call home for the latter third of his life. He was also a proud Major in the United States Air Force Reserve Medical Corps from 1985 to 1993 and was called to active duty at Andrews Air Force Base during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He received an honorable discharge in March 1993.

In his retirement, Gualberto continued to make the most of life, planning travels back to the homeland or to explore further the States or across Europe. With child-like excitement, he took recent pleasure in Arizona’s museums and chapels and the sights of the city of Los Angeles. And he certainly found much comfort in food. Having a penchant for finer things, he enjoyed high tea or the opportunity to suit up for 6-course meals. He also reveled in tastings at breweries and vineyards. A fan of the now Washington Football Team, he shared the games with family, where drinks and laughter would flow.

His children fondly remember him as someone who tried his best to be present, even if he may not have known the best way how. His love was not easy to say but to show. Almost every Sunday, while they were young, after Sunday morning mass at St. Bede Catholic Church where he would volunteer as usher weekly, he would drive the family down the hilly road (like riding a rollercoaster to thrill the kids) to a nearby indoor mall where they would walk together to build an appetite for lunch. But others around him would recognize his love language was gifts, as he rarely came to visit empty handed, no matter how big or small it might be. A true Filipino at heart, he would always bring food to share when he visited. He accepted responsibility for his sister Leonora’s grandchildren (Mariz and Leah) in the Philippines. And on top of that, he would also often gift knowledge through books he found helpful or ones he discovered while out enjoying the world, demonstrating how much he hoped for others, with a focus on learning and self-improvement.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Corazon Jose Coronado, his parents Hermenigildo and Leonora Coronado, his brother Salvador Coronado, his brother Ricardo Coronado, his brother Apolinar Coronado, his brother Alfredo Coronado, and his sister Leonora Coronado Bautista. He is survived by his loving wife Joanna Coronado, his son Glenn Coronado and wife Ninette, his son John Coronado, his son Gerald Coronado, his daughter Jennifer Coronado, his daughter Mariz, his daughter Leah, his sister Gloria Coronado Reyes, his brother Emilio Coronado, and his granddaughter Amanda Coronado.

We invite you, as we know he would have wanted, to raise a toast wherever you are in his honor, to enjoy the pleasure of good company, the thirst for betterment, and, surely, the taste of life.

The funeral mass will take place at 12:00PM on Friday January 14th, 2022 at St. Bede Catholic Church, with a viewing in the 30 minutes prior.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Angels of Mercy Clinic, where he had volunteered, or to the Williamsburg House of Mercy.
