Gordon Fleming Martens, 95, died peacefully in his sleep at home on April 8, 2016 after a short illness.
Mr. Martens was born May 25, 1920 in Boones Mill, Virginia and was raised in Portsmouth Virginia. A World War II veteran, he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Cunningham in the Pacific theater. He married the love of his life, Bettie Frances “Frankie” Martins, in 1945 and they were married until her death in 1999. A pharmacist, Mr. Martens moved to Williamsburg in 1953 and was part owner of the College Pharmacy on Duke of Gloucester Street for more than 30 years. In 2002, he married Martha Pitts Redden. Mr. Martens was a devoted husband and father, always putting others’ needs ahead of his own. He had a quick wit and a love of baseball, books, and Broadway musicals. He is survived by a daughter, The Rev. Ann Fleming Martens, of Arlington Virginia; a son, Gordon Fleming Martens, Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Houston, Texas; and a step-daughter, Marla Jackson and her husband, Bruce, of Yorktown, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at Bruton Parish Church with The Rt. Rev. David C. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
