Ernest Ginter Surles, otherwise known as “Ernie”, was born on October 17, 1941, in Newport News, VA, to John Ginter Surles and Dorothy “DOT” Isabella Surles. He passed away on July 21, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Carole J Loos, of 36 years, sister Lois Dodson and her husband Bob, brothers Ronnie Surles, and Brady Surles and his wife Carolyn, nieces Beth Dodson, Jennifer Dodson Morris, and Cathy Rimer-Surles, and nephew Collin Surles. He graduated from Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, VA, in 1963, and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, Submarine Engineering, Machinery, in 1997 after 32 years. His interests in life were golfing and running. In retirement, he started riding motorcycles and toured all 48 states in the U.S. including Alaska, and every Canadian province including the part of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. His favorite saying was “The US is a great place to ride if you stay off the interstate highways”.
