Gifts & Memorial Donations

Edythe Scharlop, of James City County Virginia, died peacefully on July 8,

  1. She lived to age 95 with an unusually positive outlook, great perspective and wisdom, and a tremendous love of people.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Scharlop, brother Gerald Nitzberg, and her parents Abraham and Ada Nitzberg.

After graduation from Walton high school in the Bronx, NY, she completed undergraduate studies at NYU, Washington Square College, and a Masters in Social Work from Smith College.  Her early work included the Community Service Society and the National Council of Jewish Women where she helped to settle immigrant students in the United States.

She worked at home raising two children to school age, and then she worked for 20 years as a Geriatric Social Worker at Elmhurst Hospital, a division of Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.

She was genuinely concerned and involved with everyone she knew – a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and professional woman.

She is survived by her children, Beth Scharlop (Roger Schultz),  Alan Scharlop(Mary) ,  grandchildren Ali, Sam, Alana and Conor and many relatives and friends.

The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff at Sentara Wound Care, Comfort Keepers, Edgeworth Park, and Hospice Community Care, for all their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Avalon Williamsburg Shelter, FISH, Inc. of Williamsburg, or an organization of personal choice.

A memorial service is planned for August 2017.   The details will be announced.
