Dr. William M. Anderson was born in Hopkinsville, KY on July 4, 1917 and passed away on April 17, 2015 at the age of 97 after a wonderful life.
Dr. Anderson grew up in Cramerton, NC, graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1938 and graduated from Washington University Medical School in 1942.
During World War II, Dr. Anderson served as a Battalion Surgeon in the European Theater and later the Army of Occupation. Upon discharge in September 1946, Captain Anderson returned to Richmond to begin his medical practice as a Resident Physician at The Medical College of Virginia; subsequently he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine. After 25 years at MCV, Dr. Anderson moved to Richmond Memorial Hospital and retired in 1982 as the Medical Director. Dr. Anderson has been a Williamsburg resident since 1984. He moved to Williamsburg Landing in 2001.
Dr. Anderson was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna P. Anderson, his second wife, Polly Bandy Anderson and a son, Alvin P. Anderson (Betsy), his parents, Rev. Alfred and Katharine Anderson and brothers, A. Scott Anderson, Col. Lewis M Anderson, Charles Harper Anderson and a sister, Katharine Anderson.
In addition to many nieces and nephews, survivors include a son, William M. Anderson, Jr. (Elyse) and a daughter, Anna Katharine Anderson. Other survivors include William and Connie Bandy, son and daughter-in-law of Polly and Elizabeth Bandy Marshal, daughter of Polly. The grandchildren are Lt. Col. W. M. Anderson (Brandee), 2nd. Lt. Sam L. Anderson (Brittany), Susan K. Anderson, Mary Beth Sherwin, Sara Huddleston (Byrne), Hilary Castro (Henry), Brooke Bandy and Alexandra Bandy. The great grandchildren are Zac LaPointe, Chloe LaPointe, Michael Kelly, Annabel Anderson, Oliver Sherwin, Carolina Sherwin, Thomas Huddleston, Meriwether Huddleston and his many friends at Williamsburg Landing and especially Ms. Pauline Schaub, Ms. Irene Faubion and Dr. Joe OíBrien.
The family greatly appreciates all the wonderful friends and superb staff our Dad has known through the years at The Landing and a special thanks to the Staff at Woodhaven for their care and love of our Father over the past 10 months.
He said to tell anyone who asked, ìI have had an interesting and wonderful life and especially here with my extended family at Williamsburg Landing and Woodhaven. Friends are family one finds along the wayî.

On Monday, April 27, a graveside commitment service with military honors will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg at 11:30am. This will be followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm conducted by Rev. Dr. Harold McKeithen and Rev. Brenda Lee in the Alvin P. Anderson Memorial Auditorium at The Williamsburg Landing.
