Edmund Joseph Conway Jr., 87, of Williamsburg, Va. passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023,with his family by his side. He was born on March 19th, 1936, in Teaneck Township, New Jersey. Edmund, also known as Ned, had a passion for physics and made significant contributions to the field. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame followed by a Master of Science degree in Physics from Georgetown University and later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. Ned’s expertise led him to work at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 35 years, where he made notable advancements, such as inventing the Gallium Arsenide Solar Cell; he earned numerous awards and patents, as well as being a published author. Among his many accomplishments, Ned was an avid tennis player and pilot. He used his private plane to provide Angel Flight transportation to help sick and needy individuals get to hospitals throughout the country.
Ned will be deeply missed by his surviving family members, including his sister, Mary Anne; his sons, Joe and Michael; his daughters, Margie and Kathleen; along with 7 treasured grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary.
The memorial service will take place at 12:30 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church on Friday, January 5, 2024. Friends, family, and colleagues are
invited to join and honor his remarkable life.
