Doris Elizabeth Keene

Doris died peacefully on December 14, 2013 in Omaha Nebraska.

She was born on December 23, 1924 to James Henry (Sr) and Nelle Bryant Keene. She was the seventh and last child and the only girl having six brothers before her. She was definitely her “daddy’s little girl”.

Doris grew up in Newport News, Va. She graduated from Newport News High School and soon went to work for a local bank. In her twenty’s she moved to Richmond, Va to spread her wings and went to work for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. After a few years she was promoted to executive assistant to the president of BC/BS for the eastern Seaboard. She held this position until her retirement in the late 1970’s.

Doris retired to Williamsburg where she had a brother she was very close to (Robert Keene) and his family. She loved to antique. She opened a little shop called The Cozy Corner at the Capital Motel. She did many shows throughout Virginia, most memorable at Walsingham Academy. She acquired quite a following. She loved the antiquing trips and always took her faithful companion Corky, a cocker spaniel.

In her later years she enjoyed her family, was an amazing cook and liked to play bridge. She was a master bridge player.

When the time came for her to have assistance for daily living, her nephew, James H. Keene, III and his wife Ruth found a lovely retirement home out in Omaha of which Doris became a resident. She spent her last years in Omaha, James and Ruth were devoted to her and took care of all her needs.

Doris is survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her well and will miss her greatly.

Bucktrout Funeral Home of Williamsburg is taking care of all arrangements.

The funeral will be Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg at 11:00 AM.

    Mary Buxton Hartman says:
My deepest sympathy to Doris' nephew and family. I've missed my girlhood friend these last years when she moved to Nebraska. I have a lot of good memories...shared vacations, dances, and lunches together.
